Maitland-Niles: ‘We will need our fans every step of the way in top four challenge’

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has called on Arsenal fans to raise the roof as the Gunners make their push for a top four finish this season.

Speaking to the official website after the 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, the versatile youngster said the fans had a part to play in the eight games remaining this season.

Here’s what he had to say:

on the overall performance…
It’s a fantastic result from the boys and I think everyone dug in as much as they could and we pulled through with a 2-0 win.

on the pressure heading into the game…
Yeah, of course [we knew how much was riding on it]. The manager spoke to us in the week and especially after our loss in midweek. We had to put things right today.

on Aubameyang scoring from the spot…
First of all it was great from Lacazette to win the penalty and to dish it off to Auba to give him his confidence back is really, really good because it shows he’s a team player. For Auba to finish it and win the game for us by taking the penalty is fantastic and he showed great courage.

on Lacazette handing Aubameyang the penalty…
We’re all team players, you know. We die for the team and you could see it today in every tackle, every chase down and every block. It was fantastic to see.

on the atmosphere…
The fans were brilliant today and we need them behind us every step of the way, just like that today. Not just big games, even in the games where we don’t have to win but we should still win. It’s fantastic to hear the noise of the fans.

on the importance of winning in the context of finishing in the top four…
It’s a big, big result for us, 2-0 at home. People don’t come here and expect to win easily, but we’ve got to keep our roll going and make it hard for teams to come here so that they know they’re not going to win.
