Unai Emery: ‘I don’t want Aubameyang and Lacazette to get frustrated over missed chances’

Unai Emery spoke to the press after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham today.

Here’s what he had to say:

On the performance overall…
“I am proud of the players, of our work. You can win, you can lose, or draw, but above all play like a team, everybody together. I think the adaptation to the match was good.

“I think we played today with a big collective spirit, tactically I think we adapted well to battle them. Also, with our transition there was some quality action for our players and I am very proud of the players because after 1-1 we found their box to score a second goal. This is the mentality we want.”

On feeling like everything went against Arsenal…
“The personality of the referee was good today. Mistakes can come because it is very difficult for them to watch in the moment an action. VAR is coming to help them and to be fair in these decisions and I think it is positive for football in England.”

On the performance of Sokratis…
“His progress is very important with this performance. I think today he played well and in the last matches he is coming with the best confidence in himself to use his skills and his capacity to help us. He also has experience for continuing and improving his process with us like today.”

On Aubameyang missing the penalty…
“I spoke with him, he has the possibility to help us for the victory but he did this action, running back and getting the penalty and after, this chance, you can score or not. His one action in 90 minutes, for me, is not one mistake, it’s one action. The most important thing is to create chances, get the ball, take penalties because we are there, and after this, we can score or no, but…create.

“It is the same with Lacazette. He had chances, two good chances in the match, ok he didn’t score, no problem, after Aubameyang came in and it was the same but this work we are doing before, this mentality, I don’t frustration after one action is a mistake or one action is not scoring.

“I want to continue creating more [chances] to find our goal. I think today we created some important chances and gave ourselves the possibility to win but today it wasn’t enough for that.”

On Aubameyang and Lacazette being unhappy as substitutes or being take off..
“They need to accept the decision because I am finding the best decision for the team and also we are playing a lot of matches. Sometimes I am not happy with them when the performance is not good and both of them are playing but I am very consistent in our work to take the best decision and to give them the chance to do the best performance for us – playing alone or playing together.”
