When Folarin Balogun dropped out of first-team contention following an extended run in and around the squad, the writing appeared to be on the wall.
With just six months left on his deal and news of multiple suitors coveting his signature, the possibility the 19-year-old might commit his immediate future to Arsenal looked bleak.
In fairness to manager Mikel Arteta, he has remained positive a resolution could be found with the Hale End talent, even when events seemed to point to a different conclusion.
But, when asked about the youngster in his pre-Leeds press conference, Arteta seemed especially upbeat. Here’s what he said:
on whether Balogun will leave at the end of the season…
“No, I’m still very positive that Flo is going to stay with us and it’s what we’re trying to do as a club, and it’s what I’m trying to do as a manager. As far as I know from last week, the player wants to be here, so I’m positive. I think he’s made some big progress in a few months.”
As ever, nothing is confirmed until it’s confirmed but, from the jaws of defeat, are Arsenal about to snatch victory? This is the most positive signal yet that the tide may at last be turning.
