Arsenal announce pre-season friendly fixtures in International Champions Cup

Arsenal’s pre-season bandwagon will be rolling into the USA again in the summer, with three International Champions Cup fixtures confirmed.

The Gunners will be facing off against Bayern Munich (July 17), AS Roma (July 20) and Real Madrid (July 23) in the latest instalment of the prestige pre-season cup that is increasingly becoming a force in world football.

Robert Pires, together with representatives and legends from Bayern Munich, AS Roma and Real Madrid were in New York on Wednesday to celebrate the official launch of the matches.

Arsenal’s managing director, Vinai Venkatesham, told the official website: “Everyone here at Arsenal is looking forward to taking part in the International Champions Cup again this summer. Our ICC matches in the United States in July will provide the team with a high level of preparation going into the 2019/20 season, and also give us the opportunity to play live in front of our many supporters across this great country.

“We are playing against three of Europe’s strongest and most high-profile club sides in magnificent stadiums, which will provide some very exciting matches ahead of our new season.”

These events are increasingly becoming a sideshow and hindrance to real summer preparation for squads as money compels clubs to travel across the globe to please sponsors, brands, and fan bases, but it is probably better to be at the global top table than fishing for scraps at the floor.

Whether we’ll be coming to the party as a fully-fledged Champions League side or a Europa League also ran remains to be seen, however.
