Edu to leave Arsenal

Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, is set to leave the club, it had been revealed.

The Brazilian, who made more than 120 appearances for the Gunners, re-joined the club in 2019 and worked under Raul Sanllehi before ultimately replacing the Spaniard as sporting director.

Edu worked closely with Mikel Arteta and masterminded a rebuild at the club which saw the departures of players such as Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the arrivals of a host of new starts, including Martin Odegaaard, Riccardo Calafiori and Declan Rice.

The reason for Edu’s departure is unclear at this stage but, just 10 games into a Premier League season, hints at malcontent behind the scenes. An underwhelming summer transfer window and a sluggish start to the new season could arguably have played a role, however.

An official statement from the club, including news of a possible replacement, is expected to be forthcoming.
